10 Ways to Organize & Brighten Your Home

Organize&Brighten

Ahh spring.  When we are ready to wave good-bye to the cold snow and frigid temperatures that here in Oklahoma just seem wrong.  We are ready to get out of the rut of being indoors, huddled under a blanket and are aiming to make some changes to our home so we can feel more fresh, more alive.  Like spring is actually coming!  We’ve come up with 10 easy ways to brighten and organize your home so that you can feel refreshed, light and beautiful in your space.

Organize

1. Purge/Clean Out – spring brings the urge to purge.  If you take just a few minutes each day to tackle unwanted areas of clutter, you’ll be able to make your way through your entire house before you know it.  Make it a priority to get rid of unwanted stuff.  This is the season for consignment sales, the start of garage sale season, and as always, the extremely convenient online FB groups.

2. Canvas Bins – these beauties are quite affordable and make life a dream.  Piles of toys?  Throw them in a bin.  They aren’t going to stay completely organized like many of us would like anyway.  This is one way to submit to that train of thought – just throw it in a bin.  Not sure you like your socks in your drawer?  Throw it in a bin.  The possibilities (and colors) are endless.

3. Washi Tape Labels – while you are restructuring your piles, why not go one step further and make it even more colorful with washi tape labels!  This is a fun way to jazz up labels and a great way to help kids recognize where things go.

4. Bring in fresh flowers.  This doesn’t have to be a weekly occurrence, but it seems that whenever there are fresh flowers in the home, it just seems like life is better.  Fresh flowers also give off a great natural scent. Which leads me to…

5. Focus on the scents in your home.  Lemons are such a bright, clean scent and makes you feel like everything around you is fresh.  Even when it’s not.  So put out a bowl of lemons.  Buy a lemon tree for the corner of your room.  Burn a lemon candle.  Okay, maybe not a lemon candle, but a clean candle scent works wonders on your space.

6. Update your wall decor.  Use this adorable printable to brighten your wall and then make a fun banner!  Use your kids colorful pictures and frame it on the wall. They are really good with using color and it will definitely pop on your walls, refrigerator or wherever you decide!

7. Change out throw pillows.  Hobby Lobby has great pillow covers that are not that expensive, especially if you can use the 40% coupon to purchase!  This is a great and inexpensive way to change out your textures. Other things to consider changing would be curtains, rugs, chair cushions or lamps.

8. Update your front door & entry way.  Create a fun, burlap wreath with seasonal decor.  Frame a spring time print and hang it on your front door instead of the usual wreath.  Design your own or buy a new front door mat that screams “welcome to my home!”

9. Fill clear mason jars, bowls, lanterns, etc. with seasonal decorations.  Shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day, plastic eggs for Easter, stars for 4th of July, leaves for fall, ornaments or battery powered lights for Christmas, fake snow for January, hearts for February…the list and options could go on!

10. Change out the knobs on your cabinets.  Most homes seem to have neutral hardware.  The lucky ones have the 70’s brass like at my house.  Update them out with fun, bright knobs that are usually on sale every other week at Hobby Lobby.  It’s a small investment for a large return.

Bonus – and if none of that just makes your heart go pitter-patter, then grab a gallon of paint and coat the walls with a new, light color!  Paint can seriously do wonders.
