An Open Letter to the Keyboard Warrior Sanctimommies

To the faceless keyboard warriors out there. To the sanctimonious mothers who insist on putting passive aggressive and offensive comments on any post they disagree with…. all for the sake of sticking your fingers in someone else’s face to boldly and shamelessly declare that you are right and they are wrong:

Stop, just stop.

Whatever happened to respectable discourse? To the freedom to have your own opinion and present it in a cognizant and constructive way? Heck, whatever happened to the good ol’ “eye roll and scroll”?

Social media has provided a beautiful way for the world to connect, near and far. Please, stop ruining it with your incessant need to feel righteous and mightier.

The most baffling fact of all is that you tend to be the same women declaring that we need to “stick together” and respect one other. That we must raise our children to be kinder, to accept all… no matter one’s sex, skin color, or religion. You are the ones preaching to stop the hate. Yet, when it comes time to practice what is preached, it only seems to apply to those with whom you agree.

Do you understand that words hurt?

Would you want someone speaking to your child this way? Better yet, would you want your own child speaking like that?

The saddest part of it all is that your kids learn from you. If you truly want a world free from hate, from sexism, racism, and bigotry… step away from the computer, put down your phone, and start in your own home.

I’m guilty of negative thoughts, too. There are times when I want to furiously type a hateful response to something I don’t agree with. But to help me refrain, I’ve found a few ways to collect myself and regain control. I encourage you to try them too.

1. Try a few easy yoga poses. I know it’s not as much fun without goats roaming around, but after a few downward dogs, you will feel like a new woman!
2. Write down three things you are grateful for.
3. Find a cluttered area in your house that’s bothering you and start organizing…you will be surprised at how much better you feel after!
4. Grab that book you’ve been meaning to read and go to a local coffee shop.
5. Send someone a sweet card “just because.”

And this is my challenge for you: next time you see a blog post, status or comment that you completely disagree with, just keep scrolling.

“Just keep scrolling, just keep scrolling, just keep scrolling scrolling scrolling.”

I’m sure, as mothers, we all have our advice, tips, tricks, and lessons we have learned along our journey. There is nothing wrong with sharing that information in a mindful and courteous manner, but the shaming and bashing has got to stop.

Christina Griffith
Born to a father who flew in the Air Force, I grew up a nomad. I've lived in Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Germany twice, and this is my third time in Oklahoma City! I graduated from Texas Christian University in 2009 (go Frogs!) and commissioned into the military that same year. I met my charmingly funny husband while I was a bright-eyed Combat Communications Officer at Tinker AFB. I separated from the military in 2013 and now focus on raising our rambunctious and precocious two year old, Harrison. Our family spent the last 3 years living in Germany. While stationed abroad, we toured to over 20 countries, that's when I stepped outside my comfort zone and discovered my love of travel and adventure. You can follow my OKC adventures by following "OKCWoman" on Instagram or my blog, www.TheOKCWoman.com. Aside from sharing my love for all things local, I'm a coffee addict and foodie who enjoys binge watching "The Great British Baking Show" and creating vintage wood signs in the garage studio while listening to my non-fiction audiobooks. My biggest love of all is my son, he challenges me everyday, while teaching me patience and unconditional love. Having him showed me the beautiful chaos that is motherhood, and I am so excited to connect and share with you all!
