1. What is the most random thing in your purse right now?

I’m so disappointed that I don’t have a good answer to this question right now. Literally, the only thing in my purse that’s not completely expected is a little red button that fell off a bracelet I made for my daughter. Don’t get me wrong…I’m a mom, so I have definitely had weird things in my purse. Most recently, what comes to mind is a pair of wet undies wrapped in paper towels from a trip to the store after my daughter SWORE she didn’t have to go potty. She had a small accident, but not enough to even wet her pants at all, so we went into the bathroom and I took off her undies. I tried to throw them away because they were an old ratty pair, but they were suddenly her favorite pair, of course. She thought it was a totally weird feeling to be wearing pants with no undies and kept walking funny and talking about it (not quietly) during our entire shopping trip.

2. How would you rather travel: by plane, train or automobile?

Definitely by automobile. Planes are good for getting somewhere quickly and trains are good for saving money, but there’s not much flexibility in either one. Real adventures happen on road trips. In a car, you can stop when you want, take a detour, spend hours (or DAYS) forcing your non-talkative SO to communicate because they can’t escape… It’s great! 🙂 Of course, the adventure could end up with two adults, an almost-four-year-old kid and two big dogs stranded on the side of the interstate in Rolla, MO like our family vacation in October. Even so, my daughter was pretty stoked about her first ride in a tow truck!

3. Favorite thing to do with children in the OKC Metro?

Doing good! My daughter just turned 4, so our formal volunteer options have been fairly limited so far, but I’m excited because it seems like she’s just about ready to take on more. I can’t really explain the feeling I get when I see her picking up trash while we’re playing at the park, when she suggests we push a couple of extra carts back to the cart corral, or when she picks up something off the floor in a store and puts it back on the rack. It’s not pride; it’s more like admiration. I don’t think I had the capacity at that age for awareness of anything beyond my immediate needs and desires. An unexpected benefit is that sometimes when she’s being a nerve-frazzling kid in a store and I’m about to sink down onto an endcap and cry my eyes out, she’ll say, “Uh-oh, Mama, look!” and run over to pick something up and it brings us both back from the brink! A tricky issue with the litter patrol is that sometimes, before I have a chance to stop her, she’s already plucked up something that makes me cringe, or if I’m somehow quick enough, I freak her out by basically tackling her before she picks up something like the presumably-used condom at the playground.

4. Favorite thing to do withOUT children in the OKC Metro?

Get down and dirty…in any Goodwill in town! 😉 I could happily spend all day digging through the glorious mess that is a Goodwill. In fact, two of my three kid-and-mankid-free blocks of time since we moved here in February have been spent in Goodwills. Incidentally, the other was the day before Thanksgiving when my boss sent us home at noon (well, 2pm for those of us who have issues with leaving things undone) and my SO convinced me to take a few hours for Mama time. I went to Joann Fabrics, where I had repeated mini panic attacks because I couldn’t get used to being alone; I kept freaking out – “Oh my gosh, where’s Giuli?!” – before remembering that she was safe with her sitter and I was safe in the haven of the little pattern nook at Joann. The panic alternated with guilt for even being alone in the first place, especially while I was paying someone to watch my daughter. Clearly, I need to work on some issues here; perhaps we should revisit this question in a few months…

Meet Laura!

1. What is the most random thing in your purse right now?

I suffer a bit from OCD, so my purse is usually a pretty clean and organized place.  However, today there is a piece of broken brick in my purse placed in there to save because it’s my daughter’s “favorite rock ever.”  🙂

2. How would you rather travel: by plane, train or automobile?

As much as I would love to say that I enjoy the “experience” of a car trip, I must be honest.  I love to fly – I love the airport, the procedures of check in, people watching, getting my routine bottle of water and peanut M&M’s before I get on the plane, and getting to my destination quickly.

3. Favorite thing to do with children in the OKC Metro?

Our favorite thing to do with the kids in the OKC area is Riversport adventures downtown.  We love the zipline across the river, climbing wall, Sky Trail adventure course, kayaking, and cycling.  We LOVE adventure activities together as a family – memory builders!!

4. Favorite thing to do withOUT children in the OKC Metro?

One of my favorite things to do without kids is going to a painting class with the girls at Paint Your Art Out.  I like things in order, however I found in these classes, that I really relax, let go, and enjoy myself!  I’ve discovered my inner amateur artist and after 2-3 hours get to bring home my masterpiece. 🙂
