Confession: I am not a LEGO Mom. I can’t stand those tiny little blocks. There are exactly 100,000 of them in each box, some ranging from the size of a quarter all the way down to the size of a speck. They don’t stay in their boxes. They roam around my house, causing me to scream when my foot inevitably lands on them. They give me headaches when my kids want to build masterpieces because my brain just can’t handle the engineering it takes to make such elaborate creations. Give me all of the toys that help my children have independent time but don’t give me those little pieces that require complete hands-on assistance.

In talking with friends I have discovered that there are many different types of moms. We all have our forte and we all have our nemesis. I am not a LEGO Mom, but I have a friend who is an All-Star LEGO mom and uses them to teach bible stories to her kids. She doesn’t just take LEGO people and tell stories. She creates these amazing LEGO Bible scenes that leave her kids begging for more details. What drives me crazy is exciting to her.
I recently took a poll to see what kind of moms other women think they are. Here are a few categories that you might relate to:
The Outdoor Mom
The Outdoor Mom loves to be outside with her kids. She loves the smell of freshly cut grass, the sounds of locusts humming, and the sight of her children exploring nature. Taking walks, hiking, bike riding, and swimming in creeks bring joy to her heart. Seeing her kids dig in the dirt and build tiny forts out of sticks delights her to no end. The extra showers and laundry that come with these outdoor adventures don’t bother her because she values the fresh air over screen time any day.
The Craft Mom
The Craft Mom loves letting her little artists go in a room full of glitter and glue, paper and scissors. Her craft closet is full of pipe cleaners in every color, organizational tubs of every size, and googly eyes that make her children giggle. Play-doh and slime don’t intimidate this mom, and her excitement level over holiday handprint crafts is through the roof. Family members have come to expect homemade art projects for birthday and Christmas gifts every year.
The Sports Mom
The Sports Mom is a multi-tasking wizard. She can throw dinner in the crockpot, drop-off four kids at four different practices, check homework papers, grab snacks for Saturday’s game, pick up all four kids, feed said kids, and handle bedtime all while maintaining her own physical fitness. She loves watching her kids thrive in their athletic element and is the loudest cheerleader on the sidelines.
The Reading Mom
The Reading Mom doesn’t care what happens in a day as long as a good book is involved. She knows the times of every Story Time at every local library, and which libraries have the best kids’ areas. Her love for a good story is only trumped by her child’s love for a good story, and she could sit on the couch with a stack of books all day. TV? No way. Give her The Little House series and she can keep her kids occupied for hours.
The Adventure Mom
The Adventure Mom wants to be at home as little as possible. It’s not that she doesn’t enjoy her home; she just wants to experience as many fun activities with her kids as possible. The zoo, science museum, indoor play places, and seasonal festivals are always marked on her calendar. Her kids are familiar with the routine; they know how to prepare their own water bottles and walk closely to the stroller to avoid getting lost. The Adventure Mom is a wealth of information and can help any new stay-at-home mom get acclimated by sharing every community calendar in publication.
There are many other types of moms out there, and some of them even overlap a little. We all have our area of expertise and enjoyment and it’s good to know where we thrive. Knowing what kind of mom we are helps us seek out other moms who enjoy the same things, as well as other moms who are good at the things we are not. What kind of mom are you?
