I Didn’t Wear Makeup To Work Today (and Other Things That Don’t Actually Matter)

Recently, I’ve been having these revelations, and one that keeps coming up again and again is this: things that matter and things that don’t. I can’t explain it. Super Moon? Earth’s orbit, maybe? Maybe it’s because I just turned 40. Who knows? But here are some things that have happened lately that didn’t turn into earth-shattering events:

I wore the same jacket to work twice in one week, and no one noticed.

You know what they did notice? That I’ve been busting my butt working on a huge event that our office is hosting this month.

Two working parents, a special needs child, and two rowdy dogs means that my house is a complete wreck most of the time. Guess what? It doesn’t matter.

You know what matters? The giggles and playtime and wrestling in the living room and the potty-training celebrations that happen every day.

I was running super late one day this week, and completely forgot to put any makeup on before I got to work.

Once I realized it, I figured I’d get a few “Oh, hey, are you alright?” or “Are you sick today?” comments. But you know what? I didn’t get a single one of those. You know what I got? I got a “Welcome to the bare-faced club!” and a “Oh girl, no one cares. I never wear any either.”

I had the option of ordering fruit or french fries with my sandwich at lunch yesterday, and you know what?

I ordered the fries. And they were delicious.

In the midst of potty training our 6-year-old daughter with autism, I have to keep reminding myself that she WILL have accidents, and that they WILL happen in the most inopportune places and at the most inopportune times.

When is the most convenient time to pee your pants? Never. She dropped her drawers on the school playground last week, squatted, and peed right on the dirt, but you know what? She’s getting it! Finally! We’ve been buying diapers for SIX YEARS, but she’s finally getting it!

My car looks like we live in it.

Mismatched shoes, more socks than I can count, fossilized fruit snacks, and even a Target bag I found the other day with two shirts I bought and completely forgot about. But it gets us to and from where we need to be, and in it, we sing songs, practice saying the alphabet, counting, and laughing.

My husband was crashed into last week by someone driving way too fast in the rain.

His car is totaled, we have to buy a new one, and my stress level has gone through the roof. But you know what? He’s okay. He’s a little sore, but he came home to us, and that’s all that matters. Everything else will shake out.

Even on nights when we get home and are too tired to move or even recap our days, there’s always Chick-fil-A fries to bring us together.

Yes, they have fruit…but order the fries.
