Holiday Traditions to Start While Your Child is Young

My husband and I have been married four years and we also have a two-year-old son and are pregnant with our second son due in March. My family has been amazing in establishing traditions that I have been able to do with my family like putting the Christmas tree up the day after Thanksgiving, and making cookies for Santa and reindeer food for the reindeers. However, when my husband and I were dating I decided to begin doing 8 days of Christmas based on my favorite group, Destiny’s Child holiday album entitled “8 days of Christmas” – a play on the traditional 12 days of Christmas.

If you are looking for a new tradition or ideas of fun activities to try this holiday season to get your kids involved, here are some ideas you can do in the house with minimal supplies or outside of the house. Our 8 days of Christmas will be a bit “low key” this year due to the pregnancy and my son’s age.

I hope some or one of these ideas inspires you to keep the holiday spirit alive! If you’re looking for a way to make your outings a little more festive you can always make cocoa and cookies to bring along!

1. Decorate a gingerbread house.

Most stores have pre-made gingerbread house kits so that you and your family can enjoy the fun of putting the house together and making it your own.

2. Watch any variation of the movie The Grinch!

There is the traditional cartoon original, the Jim Carey version and the new one out in theaters. Either way it is sure to be a hit for the kiddos.

3. Read a holiday themed book that centers a diverse perspective or culture

4. Take a ride around the neighborhood and rank your favorite decorations for the big kids or just enjoy and check out light displays in your city.

5. Get your picture taken with Santa!

It may be more difficult for the little ones but if you start early it gets better.

6.Watch the movie Star

It details the story of Jesus through the eyes of the animals.

7. Make ornaments

There are easy supplies at the Dollar store, all you need is some glue, glitter, string and construction paper.

8. Bake and decorate cookies

Sugar cookies can come pre-packaged or you can make them from scratch, either way they are bound to be hours of fun!
