{Hayley} A Letter to My Twins

VPSponsoredSeriesDear A + S,

There are moments in life that capture you and never let you go. For me that moment was almost 3 years ago when you changed my life forever. I sat in the ultrasound room waiting to see my perfect child for the first time. Big surprise, there your daddy and I sat in amazement looking at double perfection. How did we get so lucky?! From the womb cuddles to the NICU stay and beyond, it’s been nothing short of an emotional roller coaster.

There we met in an operating room full of doctors, nurses and other surgical staff on a rainy March afternoon. Not the birth plan I had imagined but let’s face it, it was the best day of my life. The moment I held you both and kissed each of you for the first time is a moment that is etched in my heart for all time. Since your arrival, I’ve also been given some of my toughest days, days where I didn’t know how we deserved to be in the situation we were in. In particular, the NICU stay and going home without you two. Life isn’t always fair but we know that there’s always a plan, even though it may seem incomprehensible at the time.

You’re healthy 2 year olds now; I can’t even believe it. It’s been an adventurous two years to say the least. You have taught me more about life than I ever thought possible. Some days we’re just trying to muddle through the day and other days we’re conquering the world. The amount of love, patience and strength you have given me is breathtaking. From the days of pure survival mode, sleeping in half hour increments, pumping every two hours around the clock, making homemade baby food, washing cloth diapers, caring for sick babies while being sick myself to creating memories that last a lifetime and giving you all the love I have to offer has been delightfully challenging and life changing. I’m having the time of my life.Screen shot 2015-01-14 at 2.55.33 PM

The two of you are so individually unique and your bond is something extraordinary. From the sweet cuddles to always making sure the other one is taken care of, you’ve shown me what unconditional love from the beginning is all about. I hope you always keep your passion of caring for one another and I hope your love for all people is as strong as your love for each other. A love that strong can only do powerful things in the world. You’re already growing into such beautiful souls and I hope that I am instilling values of great love, kindness, respect and equality into you both.

Oh how I wish I could tell you just how much I love you two but it’s simply not possible. Throughout life I hope you can see the power of my love through my actions and eagerness to always let you know how very, very special you are to me. In the meantime, I will continue to cherish the precious moments in which you’re having the time of your life, the tough moments and the learning moments. Those are all peculiar moments in which we’re creating you, the one and only you and that’s something worth celebrating for.

We’re in this together, forever and always. Thank you for making me mama.

I love you to the moon and back.

Xoxo, Mama.
