Halloween Highlights

Happy HalloweenHalloween is a holiday that I really like…until I see spiders, cobwebs, bats and other scary creatures all around.  I guess I should re-phrase and say I’m really in it for the candy.  And the apple cider.  And caramel apples.

It does seem though that kids are so overloaded with pre-Halloween activities that not many are really into Trick-or-Treating anymore.  My family had gathered to let the young kids go around the neighborhood.  Some of us (including my 1.5 year old that doesn’t quite get the concept yet) stayed behind to pass out a big bowl of candy and glow sticks.  We had the lights on, the pumpkins glowing and fun decorations in the windows.  Disappointment set in when the whole night brought us maybe seven trick-or-treaters.  Maybe.

So is the art of  going door-to-door slowly dying?  Or are parents kids so overdone on the holiday that they would rather stay at home to eat their mountain of candy already received instead of getting more?  I know there are lots of fun activities to enjoy – Trunk or Treats are becoming very popular for most churches.

Some other Halloween Highlights are:

Storybook Forest at Arcadia Lake – this is a fun night of walking through the forest to see your children’s favorite storybook characters – if you can get through the long line of cars.  My suggestion?  Go early!  I would say this is a must go-to event, just maybe not every year.

Indoor Trick or Treating at Northpark Mall – this was our first year to try this out and I really liked it!  It was better for my little ones so they weren’t freezing outside, got to enjoy getting candy and for me I got to check out the cute shops there!  Win/win, I’d say.  It took us an hour to go around.

Parkhurst Pumpkin Patch – this darling ranch will entertain your little one for hours!  They have a corn maze, pony rides, petting zoo, hay rides, a fort…you could easily plan to stay and enjoy the day.  You should also stop by Pops on the way home to grab a soda!

These are some of my family’s favorites.  What are some of your favorite pre-Halloween activities?  Do your kids still go door-to-door?

  1. We had trunk or treat at church, went to Pumpkinville at the Myriad, Orr Family Farm Pumpkin patch, and she had a party at school (all before Halloween!). It was all fun! We still managed to go trick or treating on Halloween in some neighborhoods, this was the first year she was really into it and that was fun to see! She calls the holiday “pumpkin patch day” instead of Halloween 🙂

  2. We still do door to door. Our neighborhood is packed with trick-or-treaters! We definitely see more than 100 kiddos. Although at our old house we would almost never have anyone come to the door.

  3. This year’s timing of Halloween threw me off! We didn’t do nearly as much as we did the past years. But my kids did not seem to notice at all! Maybe we’ll keep it simple next year too!
