Fall Bucket List

text hereI don’t care what the calendar or moon or equinox says, the weather is changing and therefore Fall is upon us! Maybe you call it Autumn or Football Time. Whatever the name, it is my favorite season! There was much talk on Pinterest back in May about Summer Bucket Lists, but I’ve been working one up for this fabulous season and I thought I would share it with you! Here is our family’s Fall Bucket List:

The Oklahoma State Fair. It was just here and I hope you made your way to the fairgrounds! It was a time for us to don flannel shirts, gorge ourselves on bacon wrapped fried atrocities, throw up those calories riding insane rides put together in less than 24 hours, watch Disney on Ice, see who grew the largest pumpkin and sewed the prettiest quilt. It’s just too much fun to pass up!

Corndog as big as your head….check! A well balanced meal at the state fair!

A Pumpkin Patch outing. We’ve been to several different ones in the past and I haven’t narrowed down which one we will visit this year. They all offer a host of things but there’s usually a pony ride, free pumpkin, corn maze, hay ride, and petting zoo at all of them. Always a great photo op with all those gourds!

We always love Pumpkinville at the Myriad Gardens!

Plant some fall foliage. I love mums on the porch. And seeing those displays of pansies, pumpkins, and mums out at the gardening centers makes my heart skip a beat!

Nothing prettier than mums on a porch…and my daughter beside them!

Pumpkin baking. You know you love eating and/or drinking something with that fall flavor in it! My favorite is pumpkin bread but I also enjoy pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. I know my daughter and I will be making a few loaves. Some for now and some for the freezer for later!

Pumpkin bread, pumpkin bread, wherefore art thou pumpkin bread…..

Smores on the fire pit. There’s only a brief window when we can enjoy our backyard firepit because it’s either WAY too hot in Oklahoma, WAY too cold, or we are under a burn ban. So we will enjoy it as many nights as we can and maybe we will try to invite some friends or neighbors over to join us for smores a few nights!

Pass out Halloween Candy. We have never lived in a neighborhood that got trick-or-treat traffic. However we just recently moved into the neighborhood that we always took our daughter trick-or-treating in because it’s so fabulous. The neighborhood really goes all out and kids come from all around the metro. I’m excited to sit on the porch and see everyone’s costumes….and maybe snag some candy out of my own bucket too!

Passing out candy with kiddos is always a blast!

Fall break family trip. This is my daughter’s first year in school and we are both counting down the days until her first big two week break. I’m sure we will do lots of things around the city during our time together but we are planning a family trip to see some friends in Houston. I am valuing our family together time much more now that she’s away from 8:00-4:00 5 days a week!

Hot Air Balloon Fest. My daughter has been very interested in going on a hot air balloon ride lately. I’ve never been on one, but a friend told me about the hot air balloon festival in Poteau, OK. It’s coming up the third weekend in October and we plan to check it out!

Celebrate Thanksgiving! In our family, we usually celebrate in Tennessee with my side of the family and since Christmas and my birthday are close we have a tri-fecta holiday weekend of sorts that never disappoints in the food or family category!

Read The Witch of Blackbird Pond. My sister-in-law reads this every fall and I tried it one year and must say I found it quite enjoyable. It’s a juvenile fiction book so it’s a fast read that gets you in the fall spirit.

Plan for a purposeful Christmas season. This year I really want to try to focus on giving more than receiving in our family and in order to not get caught up in the consumer spirit, I think it’s going to take some purposeful planning on our part which I hope to do before December is here! There are many great opportunities in our city and I’m sure we will be sharing more of those later in the season.

That’s our list so far (you might notice there isn’t any football related activity but what can I say…we aren’t sports fans!), but I feel like it could grow some more.

What is on your bucket list for Fall? Please share!

Katie
Katie left her home state of Tennessee to come pursue an interior design degree in Oklahoma fourteen years ago. She met a handsome young fella from Oregon while in school, and they decided to marry and settle down in OKC. A dog and two daughters soon followed. She has been a textile designer, showroom merchandiser, custom furniture draftsman and children’s minister, but her most challenging and favorite role has definitely been that of a mother. You can read about the adventures she shares with her family at Strawberry Ruckus. Katie enjoys reading, being creative, exploring old houses, eating peanut butter, zumba and watching complete television series all at once on Netflix.

  1. We are checking out the Hot Air Balloon Festival too! We may be a little too early, but we’re going to try to drive the Talimena trail on the way back 🙂

    Great list, Katie!

    • Ooo I’ve never heard of this trail but we might just have to take it too! I just found out how far away Poteau is from OKC, probably should’ve looked that up before I committed it to the list!
