The Dry Shampoo Hack Every Mom Needs To Know

dry shampoo hack

I love a good dry shampoo, however I haven’t always sung it’s praises.

My hair is very fine and tends to be on the greasy side.  I used to wash my hair every day because honestly if I skipped a day I had a one way ticket to grease ball central, and I didn’t think dry shampoo worked for me.  I had tried it many times, however each time by the end of the day my hair looked disgusting.   So despite the fact that I had three children all under the age of five, I still made it a priority to wash my hair daily.

And then I learned a secret because, let’s face it, ain’t nobody got time for that.

So lean in closer, sister, I’m about to spill the beans.

On the back of most dry shampoo bottles the steps are listed as:

  1. Shake well.  Hold can 12 in. from hair, section and spray into roots.
  2. Message thoroughly with fingertips.
  3. Brush hair to remove excess residue, and style.

However, there is one step that’s rarely mentioned, and I feel like this simple hack extends the life of dry shampoo exponentially.

The trick to getting dry shampoo to last all day is to spray the dry shampoo in your hair, and leave it there for a good solid 5 to 10 minutes.  Massage it into your roots and then let it sit there while you painfully watch your toddler put their shoes on themselves, nurse a cranky baby, or drink a cold cup of coffee.

When you feel like you’re good and ready to go about your day, brush it out and VOILA!  Clean looking hair that lasts all day!

Why does this hack work so well?  It’s because if you leave the dry shampoo in your hair instead of immediately brushing it out, the dry shampoo is able to work it’s magic by allowing the powder to have ample time to soak up all of the oil that’s hiding out on your head.

When the powder is brushed out too quickly after use, the dry shampoo doesn’t have adequate time to do it’s job which can leave the hair still looking oily and dirty.

Make sense?

Give it a try and see if you can tell the difference!
