So, I’m not crafty, although I really really want to be. BUT – I can follow directions. I have several things that I love to make instead of buy. Vanilla extract is one of those things. Now, I could say that I make my own vanilla extract because it’s so much healthier, but really it’s because of the cost. Have you bought vanilla extract lately? It’s so expensive for such a tiny little bottle!!
I’ve had several people ask me how I make my own, so I thought I would put it out there. It’s so easy to make and makes a ton! It’s great to give as gifts too!
So here’s what you need…
I just use a Ball canning jar unless I’m giving it away and then I get a decorative jar from Hobby Lobby.
Now here’s where I get picky. I researched vanilla beans to make sure that I got the right ones. I’m kind of a weirdo, I don’t like Mexican vanilla. My husband thinks I’m crazy and can’t really tell the difference. But I can totally tell when people have used Mexican vanilla. So I did a little research and decided that I wanted Madagascar Bourbon beans. I found a place where I could buy them on Amazon.
The biggest, cheapest bottle of vodka you can find. This is always super fun to go in the liquor store and ask for because they look at you like you’re crazy and try to convince you to buy better vodka. Nope, just the cheap stuff for me!
Put three to four beans in a jar and fill the jar up with vodka. Close the jar and put it in a cabinet for 3 to 6 months.
Voila! Vanilla Extract!
After you use up all your extract you can take the beans out and scrape the insides into homemade ice cream or icing for a cake or these tasty vanilla bean cupcakes! Yummy!
We want to know! What’s your favorite thing to make instead of buy?
That’s wayyy too easy. Vanilla extract all around! Love it – thanks for sharing.
