DIY Felt Christmas Tree

untitled-design-28

I got the holiday bug early this year and my mind went straight to Christmas. I find it hard not to get SUPER excited for Christmas now that I have little ones.

So I did this project and put it up in my house at the beginning of October. Yes, you heard me right. OCTOBER! I’m pretty much the Hobby Lobby of the mom world over here now. My Christmas décor started so early this year. I’m not sure if I should be ashamed or proud. What if I start even earlier next year??

If you have little kids at home and are crazy about Christmas like me, or even if you’re not crazy and just want to decorate at a much more sane time of the year, then you need to take a stab at this project.

This was THE EASIEST Christmas craft EVER! I’m talking like 20-30 minutes start to finish.

For this project you will need:

  • Felt in a variety of colors
  • Command strips
  • Ornament & star template (I just googled “free printable ornament template” and found a ton of options)
  • Scissors
Felt, in a variety of colors, can be found at most craft stores.

First, you need to cut out the main part of the tree. For this part I purchased felt by the yard in the fabric store and bought about a yard of material. I chose traditional green for my tree. But if you have a kid who’s always wanted a hot pink tree than this could be the perfect time to try that out!

I had a specific little wall in my house where I planned to put this tree so I had to measure to decide how large I could make it. I roughly cut out a rectangle of fabric in the height & width that I wanted and folded it in half lengthwise (or the hot dog way as I used to say as a kid).

Next, I took a sharpie and free handed the shape of a tree onto one half and cut it out.  Once cut, I unfolded the felt to reveal the full shape of the tree.

When I was happy with the shape, I hung my tree on the wall using command strips. Since this project is temporary, I didn’t want to put any extra holes in my wall to hang it up. Once on the wall, cut a rectangle of brown felt for the stump and hang it directly below the tree.

After the main tree was on the wall, I printed my ornament & star templates that I found online. I traced them onto cardstock so I had a sturdy pattern to work with.

Next, I took my templates and traced a big star on yellow felt for the tree topper. Then I took my ornament template and traced A LOT of ornaments out of various colors of felt.

Once you have enough ornaments traced (or you’re just tired of doing it…whichever comes first), cut everything out and hand the star & ornaments to your kids.

You’re finished!

My kids wasted no time decorating their tree. They had some disagreements about how it should be decorated so they just did it several different times until all their ideas had been executed.

They usually play with the tree a little bit each day. I’ve overheard them discussing with each other what they want for Christmas or whether they think they’re on the nice list or naughty list.

My kids love it and I think this is going to be a fun activity to take us all the way through the holidays.
