Well, it happened. Our first child lulled us into a false sense of security, and we decided to have another. After spending much time laying in bed (thanks, morning sickness) while my toddler watches episode after episode of Daniel Tiger, I’ve done some pretty extensive research on registry essentials for baby number two.
If you’re fortunate enough to be given a “sprinkle” or to just have generous friends and family, you can ask for a few additional pieces of gear to make the transition from one to two a little bit easier. Also, Facebook Marketplace and resale events like Rhea Lana’s or Just Between Friends are great for finding gently used items at a fraction of the cost. I found my double stroller for 1/4th of the original price on FB Marketplace – woot!
1. Baby Carrier
This is far and above the most highly recommended item for baby #2. I have to admit, I was late to the baby-wearing game with my first, but once I started, I never looked back. It’s amazing what you can do with a baby strapped to you and two free hands! I even hiked through a river with my son on my back. That was awesome.
Not only will you not have time to hold your second like you did with your first, but you might also want to protect them from the “inquisitive” nature of your first-born. The carrier accomplishes both. I’ve heard great things about ring slings, Moby wrap, and Baby K’Tan. Soft-structured carriers like LilleBaby, Ergo and Tula are awesome when they’re a bit older.
2. Double Monitor Camera
Assuming your kiddos won’t be napping/playing in the same room all the time, you’ll want to keep an eye on both of them. My baby monitor can accommodate two cameras, so I can switch back-and-forth to watch. It’s an Infant Optics DXR-8.
3. Door lock covers
These little pieces of fabric and elastic are a lifesaver if your first kiddo (or partner) loves to open and close (SLAM) doors in the house. They just slip over the handles and keep that lock from loudly clicking into place. You can DIY them or, if you’re like me and don’t have the patience for crafts, buy them already made! There are also child-proof door lock covers, so your toddler doesn’t barge into the room where the baby is sleeping.
4. Baby lounger
Baby loungers like the Dock-a-tot, Snuggle Me and Boppy Newborn Lounger serve as a great a portable home base for new baby. That is, until they can roll or sit up! Please follow safe sleep practices and use these loungers according to manufacturer instructions.
5. Touch nightlight
Nighttime feedings can be made easier with a battery-powered touch nightlight. Just tap the top, and you can adjust the level of brightness.
6. Books about new baby
It’s important to help your child prepare for their new sibling, as much as it’s possible. There will still be an adjustment period, but these books will pave the way.

7. Adjusted expectations
I know, this isn’t an item you can add to a registry, but it’s essential nonetheless. The experience with your second child will undoubtedly be different than the first. Sure, you’ll have the same sleepless nights, and the same sweet cuddles, but maybe not as many as before. That doesn’t mean it won’t be just as special.
