4 Ideas for an Epic OKC Mom’s Night Out

mom's night out

Need to have a mom’s night out but don’t know where to start?  (We’re talking more than just going to the grocery store without your kids in tow!)  Lucky for you, we’ve done some of the thinking for you and come up with 4 Ideas for an Epic OKC Mom’s Night Out.

  1.  Be a foodie.  Take a break from the yoga pants, slap on the jeans that make you look good, partner with a pair of heels, and meet your gal pals at a nice, sit-down restaurant.  You know, one where you order from the menu AFTER you sit down and where you can not only have adult conversation, but you are only responsible for cutting your own food and have the opportunity to savor the taste of something delectable.  Made by someone else.  Most likely a chef.   Remind yourself that food is often meant to be enjoyed, and so is girlfriend gab.  Why not mix the two?  A few of my local favorite spots for eating out with the girls are Whiskey Cake, 1492, Kitchen 324 and Café 501.  What would you add to the list?
  2. Test out your creative side.  Meet your besties at a painting class, an Art gallery, sign up for a class such chocolate making, cake decorating, pottery or photography and do it together.  I promise you, laughs will ensue and at the end of a night like this, you have something to show for it.  Even if it’s a painted canvas that you later let your daughter paint over because let’s face it…those clouds on the horizon of a sunset and sailboat never quite looked right to you and don’t match your decor.  Or maybe you’re the one who learns that you are a little bit better at cake decorating than you thought.  Be excited about this and your opportunity to do more of it in the future.  Check out Art After 5 or a special class, movie or exhibition at the OKC Museum of Art.  Pick up a paintbrush at Wine and Palette, Paint Your art Out, or another local social painting venue. See what your local craft store, city recreation department or bakery offers that you and your friends would be interested in…then sign up and do it!
  3. Sip a little.  Try a wine tasting at a local winery, or local-brewed beer at a pub, all while catching up with your friends about life and remembering that, while you love your littles fiercely, you also enjoy grown-up company so much.  What’s your favorite place to sip a little?  I like the Patriarch in Edmond with it’s local brewed beer, food trucks, outdoor games and overall cool atmosphere.  I would also love to try Put a Cork in It in Bricktown or the Clauren Ridge Winery in Edmond.  Even an adult night to the new Pops in Nichols Hills would be fun, especially if you mix it up by picking out each other’s drinks.  (Bacon-flavored pop, anyone?) Oh, and I’d love to challenge my buddies to an epic Ms. Pac-Man Battle at the FlashBack Retro Pub, wouldn’t you?
  4. Be a little bit adventurous.  Oklahoma City has quite a variety of adventure activities that would create bonding moments with your other momma friends that would last a lifetime.  (You remember that one time I almost died on that zip line but actually just peed my pants a little instead??)  You could start by grabbing onto some girl power by watching a match of the Oklahoma Victory Dolls or OKC Outlaws roller derby teams OR you could participate in a variety of adventure activities down at the Boathouse District such as a group dragon boating experience, indoor rock climbing, zip-lining and more.  For the truly adventurous, sign up to sky-dive together!  Or just try out the new putt-putt area in Bricktown and see who gets the best score.  A different kind of food adventure (way less “foodie” than number 1 on the list) is to research what local spots have been frequented by Guy Fieri on Diner’s Drive-ins & Dives and then check out a local greasy spoon together.  Give it your own rating at the end of the night.  (Calories don’t count, right?)

Whatever sounds good to you, my advice is to just do it.  It doesn’t have to be epic.  It doesn’t have to be fancy.  It just needs to happen!  Getting out with your girlfriends is not only like a breath of fresh air for your momma mind, but your husband will be glad as well, I promise.  If it’s true that women really do talk some 13,000 more words a day than men, he will be glad that phenomenon is a little more balanced after an night out with your friends!  So what are you waiting for?  Let’s make some plans, ladies!
