3 Mom Friendly Fall Fashion Items To Buy This Season

3 Mom Friendly

If you’re like me, you’re giddy beyond words when you feel and smell that first sign of Fall with a crisp breeze, pumpkin everything, leaves turning their colors, football starts up, and a hot latte never tasted so good! Fall also means the cutest clothing options, and at the first sign of Fall I am quickly putting away the tank tops and getting out my knitted scarves, favorite jackets, boots that have been put away for the Summer and I am putting the razor away (these legs will be covered).

This fall, contain your desire to buy everything that is on trend and read through the top 3 items that are worth getting for all moms. Whether you stay home, work in an office, own your own business, or are an empty-nester, these 3 things are all you need for an effortless and stylish Fall look.

1. The Bomber/Letterman Jacket

The varsity jacket, the bomber jacket, the letterman jacket … they all fall in the same category and bottom line, I highly suggest adding this jacket to your wardrobe for the Fall season. It’ll update all of your t-shirt and jean outfits. It’ll be like your adult blankey for your wardrobe.

This jacket has been without a doubt a staple piece for the season, and although this jacket stems from the American school system … PLEASE DO NOT bring out your old letterman jacket and think it’s “stylish” and will work. Let me be the first to tell you, IT DOESN’T and please DO NOT be that girl. I love you too much let you walk out of your house sporting your 1986 or 1996 letterman jacket from cheer or volleyball. You will need to buy a contemporary version of this style of jacket in order for it to work. The new ones are cut slimmer, the sleeves aren’t puffy like a traditional varsity jacket, and the fabric isn’t heavy wool. This jacket is a very quick and effortless add on for your wardrobe and it’ll style up your t-shirt and jeans uniform.

2. Dark Denim Jeans

If there is ONE thing I would highly suggest that you do for yourself more than anything is to UPDATE your jeans. Spend a day trying on different pairs, it’s a trial and error thing. If you own 3 pair of really great fitting jeans, you are set for the year. Dark denim will be everywhere this year. It NEEDS to be in your wardrobe. It’s flattering on every body type and it’s easy to wear.

Do not be scared of the words “jegging” or “high rise”.

These are good for your body words, these are flattering to your shape words, these are fabulous fit words. If you are a size 2 or a size 22, YOU CAN wear a skinny jean, a straight leg jean, a jegging, & a high rise jegging, etc. You will need to either size up from your normal size, or actually take the time to get properly measured for your true size. DO NOT focus on a number, clothes are mass produced, they aren’t made for ONE body type, so grant yourself some grace and stop getting frustrated about a number on your pant size and PLEASE find a good fitting pair of jeans. Stop beating yourself up and get on with it. A great fitting pair of jeans is everything, take the time to do it. Learn what your body type is (pinterest is a great resource for this), then google the best jeans for your body type, and then look into trying some of those jeans on, trial and error. It doesn’t have to be complicated, take a deep breath, and dive in.

3. A Nod to the 70’s

You will see a lot of 70’s inspired looks this season. You do not have to own everything 70’s and feel like you have on a costume. I like giving a nod to the 70’s and adding pieces here and there that are 70’s inspired. You can start with a simple pair of MODERN FLARE jeans.

Here’s the thing to know with these jeans: it’s VERY important to make sure they are very slim in the thigh area and then start to flare below the knee. All shapes, sizes, and heights can wear these jeans … BUT you will need to make sure to wear a shoe that has some height to it unless you are naturally over 6ft tall and can pull off wearing flats with these jeans.

What sort of wedge type shoe can you wear while being a busy mom? Your golden answer: Toms Wedge Boots! I assure you the investment in these boots for the Fall season will be well worth it. They are VERY VERY VERY comfortable for running errands, chasing kids, all day er’ day daily life. As a style coach I would not steer you wrong. They are the perfect height in a wedge and very easy to walk in. I cannot stress to you enough how comfortable they are and you will 100% thank me later. It’s worth it and they can be your EVERYDAY go-to shoe for the entire season!

If you just can’t bring yourself to try to the modern flare jeans, then add a 70’s inspired hat to your outfit, or add a 70’s inspired fall color kimono to your outfit, or add a 70’s inspired top with Fall colors and a paisley print to your favorite pair of jeans. Remember, you are giving a “nod” to the 70’s, you are not putting on a costume. A little tip with how to wear modern flares for the Fall, keep it simple with your top … A cute stylish sweatshirt, a long sleeved striped cotton tee, or your trusty plaid button down from last year would work perfectly.

Enjoy the Fall season, add one or all of these items as a style spruce up for your 2016 wardrobe. Don’t forget that your style is who you are in this season of life, and you don’t have to conform to EVERY trend, but it’s nice to keep your wardrobe updated with one or two things every year. It’s good to treat yo’ self, and why wouldn’t you? You will be buying new school clothes for your kids, why not add 1 or 2 things for the beginning of a new school year for your Fall wardrobe.

(Bonus Tip: Fall Trends that you may already own that will be showing up a lot this season – Leopard print, pleated accordion style skirts, anything that is spicy mustard colored, potters clay orange colored, and dusty rose colored.)

  1. Thanks for the suggestions! I particularly like the pep talk about not looking at the numbers when trying on jeans. I usually avoid jeans at all costs because it seems such a humiliating numbers game! I will keep your spirit in mind next time! 🙂

    • Jenny,
You are super welcome! Please don’t focus on the number, Tim Gunn from Project Runway even talks about this … clothes were made for the masses not one sort of body, so that mean they are all cut differently. Buy what fits right, not the number you think should be “acceptable”. Happy Shopping and loving your self! xoxo
