Music is powerful. For me, it’s all encompassing. It ignites all of my senses. I hear a song from my past and instantly a flood of smells, images, sounds, and emotions fill my heart and mind. Kiss from a Rose by Seal brings to mind a winding German road and the beautiful castle nestled on a beautifully, green mountainside …and Batman, of course. U2’s It’s a Beautiful Day takes me back to the year I studied abroad in Austria. Of course, I wanna Grow Old with You by Adam Sandler brings certain pitter patters and memories of walking down the aisle with my husband. Certain songs even remind me of specific people and I can’t help but pray for them as I sing along.
Over the years, different songs have touched my family’s heart but there are two that literally stop us in our tracks wherever we are and bring us together for a dancefest of immense proportions.
The Piano Guy’s rendition of What Makes You Beautiful is an amazing visual expression of creativity! If you haven’t seen it, it is a must watch. We watch and dance in awe of how they play this song using only a piano. For us, it is a reminder that everything has potential for being great and seeing something for more than just what it’s typically believed to be. YEP! I just turned on the song and even though my children were on the other side of the house playing Indians, my oldest yelled, “Hey, Guys! The Piano Song!” They all ran into the office and now we are dancing, clapping and spinning…oh the spinning!! And when it’s over, one of them will yell, “Again!” and for the next 40 minutes we will enjoy dancing with each other. It’s a time filled with giggles and making awesome memories that will be relived decades later whenever we hear the song again.
The Piano Guys tour all over Europe and throughout the States, including Oklahoma! They just came to Tulsa on September 27 so be on the lookout for more tour dates!
Fix My Eyes by For King & Country is now our family’s anthem. Again, it’s a song that causes my kids to beg me to turn the radio louder. However, it’s more than just a fun song. It’s how we try to live our lives and that’s why it’s so special to us. We want to be a family that makes a huge, positive difference in this world. I guess you could almost say this is our “fight song” that gets us pumped up and prepared for whatever opportunity comes our way. If the percussion in this song doesn’t get your heart pumping, you’ve already flat lined. The chorus is powerful and yes, we have dance moves & hand motions for it all…
Love like I’m not scared
Give when it’s not fair
Live life for another
Take time for a brother
Fight for the weak ones
Speak out for freedom
Find faith in the battle
Stand tall but above it all
Fix my eyes on you
I fix my eyes on you
I fix my eyes on you
I love when this song comes on the radio because we blast it on the radio and then the loud, crazy singing ensues. Lately, my kids get even more excited when they hear it because we got to see them live in concert! At the Oklahoma State Fair of all places! I thought we’d have to travel to see them but no, they came to our own backyard.
My hope is that over the years, not only will they have memories of how this song brought us together as a family, but that it will make such an impact on their heart that they will be reminded of it every time they take time for someone else, make an unselfish choice, stand up for what is right, and find faith in the battles of life.
I agree with you, Kristi! We are a music loving family. Right now we like to jam out to Frozen *obviously* but yesterday Happy by Pharrell came on Spotify and both my kids couldn’t stop movin’ and groovin’!!
Those are such fun songs! Oh…there are so many to choose from. Now, I’ve got the Happy song stuck in my head and I can’t stop smiling.
