5 Reasons Why Mothers In Law Are Awesome

One of the hardest things after deciding to move to Oklahoma from Peru was getting used to living away from my family and what I knew was home. If moving to a different country wasn’t hard enough, I got married and ultimately joined a new family. Honestly, I really liked my husband’s family dynamics from the beginning. However, I won’t deny that I was afraid that once we got married things would change because I wouldn’t be just “the girlfriend” anymore, I would be the wife.

On top of that, I was raised in a culture where people’s in-laws, especially one’s mother-in-law, is typically too involved in the marriage. I feared all those scary stories would play out in my life. Ultimately though, I committed myself to treat my new in-laws with love and respect whether they like me or not. I believed that when I vowed to be part of a new family I had to try my best.

Luckily for me, none of my fears played out, and they have accepted me since day one. I have a great relationship with my in-laws, especially my mother-in-law.

Here are 5 reasons why mothers in law are awesome.

1. They have your back.

After having 2 c-sections, I needed extra help. My husband has a demanding job and was only able to take a few days off of work to help me. So my mother-in-law took over while I was recovering. She came to my house, kindly made breakfast for me, helped me with laundry and went grocery shopping. She even brought many meals for us.

2. Someone to count on.

It took a long time for me to get my driver’s license. My mother-in-law used to drive me and my kids to their doctor appointments, and to go grocery shopping. Words can not even describe how amazing it is to know that I have someone in my life who is always there for me.

3. Someone to lean on.

During the time we have known each other, we have lost people that we cared for. She has been there for me when I needed comfort. I hope she knows I’m there for her in the toughest times as well.

4. A cheerleader.

My mother-in-law is always cheering me on when I take on new projects or venture into unknown territories. When I start doubting myself worrying that things won’t work out, she is always there to give me encouraging words. She is always happy for my accomplishments, and I am so blessed to know I have her supporting me through thick and thin.

5. You get a new friend.

I know she is my mother-in-law but I also consider her my friend. I know I can always call on her to do a little shopping, go for a run (we are training together for next year’s Oklahoma City marathon), or even just chat about my favorite new Netflix series. We always make a point to carve out some time to catch up on what has been going on in our lives when life gets too busy.

My mom and my mother-in-law

I have so many nice things to say about my in-laws (So many, in fact, that some people might get annoyed at my gushing) but the truth is that they have been there for us. I am so grateful that my mother-in-law welcomed me so kindly into her family. There is no better feeling when my own mother is miles away than to have someone there for me. My in-laws have showed me by example the type of mother-in-law that I want to be someday. I want to be as available, warm, and kind as my husband’s parents have been with me. There is no better feeling than being a part of a loving and welcoming family. They have truly helped make Oklahoma my home away from home.

Sandy
Hello OKC! I was born and raised in Peru. I visited Oklahoma twice during my summer breaks from Nursing School. I met my husband on my last trip and I decided to stay. We have 2 energetic children, Alex (7) and Amanda (4). We currently live in Midwest City. I enjoy cooking, baking, working out. and binge watching shows on Netflix with my husband. Chocolate is my favorite treat and I love it too much to give it up.
