Festive and Fabulous – St. Patrick’s Day Outfit Ideas

St. Patrick’s Day is quickly approaching and you have outfits picked out for your children, but what are you wearing to bring in the holiday? Fun fact: The color that was first associated with this day was a shade of blue, not green. The color green ended up being more popular simply because of the shamrock and what it represented, as well as the lush green rolling hills in Ireland. The color orange is also worn sometimes and that represents unity with the Protestants in Ireland.

Speaking from a style perspective, green can sometimes be a challenging color to work with for some women, but it’s such a great color. The color green represents harmony, balance, and growth. Green is my personal favorite color and has been for years, but surprisingly I have very little of it in my closet. I am not sure why, but in my sea of black, gray, and white, green isn’t something I mix in a lot and I am going to change that this Spring. Here are some St. Patrick’s Day outfit ideas to inspire you to look festive and fabulous.

1. Keeping it Simple

Wear your basics from your closet such as these white jeans and a denim button down, and then add pops of green whether that be a scarf, earrings, necklace, your phone cover, to-go coffee cup, nail polish, etc. When you use your basics as your canvas, adding pops of green will show up a lot better. I have a close friend who is not a fan of green at all, and she still wants to be festive, but not necessarily with her clothes. Adding pops of green where you can will keep it simple but festive. Make sure your green is visible, wearing green socks that you can’t see doesn’t count, you’ll get pinched, wait … that may not be a bad thing if you are single! Kidding!

2. Keeping it Girly Green

There are a variety of ways to make a version of this work in your closet. Look for stripes in tops, skirts, dresses, and mix in the options from your own closet.

As you know by now, I love dresses. If you are a woman who loves dresses or loves the concept of incorporating dresses into your closet, here are some festive but simple options of outfits that you can put together for the holiday. Stripes are such a great pattern to mix with other prints, and this pattern adds a pop in your outfit on it’s own. Stripes are effortless, and you don’t have to add a lot to them at all, or if you do mix it with another pattern like leopard it makes it that much more stylish. Don’t forget that you can use this look with other options in your closet. For instance, if you have a striped black and white top, pair that with jeans and flats and add a pop of green with a scarf or earrings. You can also wear a striped skirt with a solid top, or if you are feeling super stylish, mix a black and white polka dot top with a green striped skirt, or mix a striped green and white top with leopard pants/skirt. Something that I remind women of is that layering over dresses, especially maxi dresses works too. I have had clients look in their closet and say that they don’t have a striped skirt and they have failed to realize that they do have one, they have a striped black and white maxi tank top dress, and all you have to do is layer a top over it and then you have an instant black and white skirt. Women also have short dresses with spaghetti straps that they forget can be turned into “skirts” by simply layering a top over it. You have endless options if you just look at what you have in your closet.

3. Keeping it Casual and Comfy

I have one pair of blue jean shorts that I wear over and over and over again in the Spring and Summer, and if you don’t own a pair that you truly like, I’d highly recommend trying on multiple pairs from American Eagle. Surprisingly the answer is YES, they do carry blue jean shorts that don’t make us look like we came out of the Anaconda video. I have tried a variety of blue jean shorts over the years and with my clients, and American Eagle always wins. They carry all lengths and all types of styles and I’ve never walked out of there with an unhappy client; they have always found their “fit” and “style”. Adding one simple hair accessory can make your whole outfit festive for this holiday. Throw on your blue jean shorts, a basic cotton top, your toms/chucks/sandals and add a green turban headband, green headband, green bandanna turned into a headband. Even if you have a baseball cap with green you can add that, or look through your summer fedoras or sun hats and see if any of them have accents of green in it. My grandmother is a DIY kinda gal, and she cut the bottom of a green t-shirt and wrapped that around my hair as a headband one year. She also bought one yard of green lace from the fabric store and cut it in half in order for my cousin and I to have lace green headbands that she tied in a bow in our hair. The DIY options are endless. I am sure you have items in your household that would work in your hair. The answer is yes, you can wear items in your hair and not look like you’re 3 years old. Keep it simple and effortless and it’ll always work well. Don’t over think it.

Have a fun festive fabulous St. Patrick’s Day! “Here’s to me and here’s to you, and here’s to love and laughter. I’ll be true as long as you, and not one moment after.” – Irish Blessing. Cheers!
