Decorating Children’s Rooms: A Budget Friendly Guide

When we moved into our new house we decided that it would be a good time to transition our daughter into a big girl room. She had outgrown her baby bedding and decor and was ready for something that looked a little more mature.

Our daughter said that she wanted to decorate her room with poodles, flowers, and the color pink. Since this “theme” isn’t exactly run of the mill, I knew that I would have to get creative in order to not break the bank. We set a strict budget for her room, and with a little imagination I managed to (mostly) stay with-in our budget.

Here are some of the ways that I decorated my child’s room on a dime.

1. Pick Neutral Bedding – If the bedding is a neutral color, it is easy to transform the space simply by changing the accent color. For my daughter’s room we bought a white bedspread and used light pink and gray as the accent colors. In a couple of years when she is tired of this color scheme, no big deal! Not everything has to go!

2. Find Reasonably Priced Art – I could hardly believe my eyes when I discovered this darling gray and pink dancing poodle picture from an adorable little shop on Etsy called the Artful Bumblebee. The best part? The print was only $20 and I framed it using a frame I found from Hobby Lobby that was fifty percent off. If you don’t want to find something online, there are many great places around the metro to find inexpensive art and decor for children’s rooms. I like to check the discount aisle at Hobby Lobby. Also, Basket Market always has greats finds. They carry a lot of the same items as Hobby Lobby but for a fraction of the price. Another option would be to give your kids paper and a paint brush and let them go to town creating their own designs!

3. Find Items Second-Hand – Garage sales, Craigslist, and kids consignment sales can be a decorators best friend. Sometimes pieces such as bookshelves and beds can be found for a fraction of the retail price. Who doesn’t love saving a little money?

4. Go Shopping In Your Own Home – It’s amazing what a little elbow grease and spray paint can do to your old and unused items. To add a special touch to my daughter’s room, I took an old metal candle holder that had been sitting in our garage and spray painted it white. Then I took twinkle lights and sheer curtains and draped them through. It was a simple and inexpensive touch that added a lot to her room.

5. Have Fun – Let the kids be creative and help them build a relaxing and inviting space that they enjoy being in. Let them personalize it, and let them have fun adding their own unique touches.
