Baby Signing Time

Caroline watching and practicing different signs.

Since it’s cold outside and this has been a life saver for us this week, I thought I’d let you in on a little secret… I let my one year old watch TV. I know I shouldn’t and we really don’t watch a lot, but she does watch some, especially when its so cold outside. What is her favorite thing to watch? Her favorite is Baby Signing Time – hands down. She even makes the little sign for baby and then for time so that we know she wants to watch it.

If you have a little one, I would highly encourage watching these videos. I knew that I wanted to incorporate sign language in to our lives. Then, I went over to a friend’s house and she had this video playing and Caroline was mesmerized. So I rented the videos on Amazon Prime and let her watch them a couple times. I was amazed on how quickly she picked up on the signs. And did I mention that she LOVES the videos?

Sign language is a great tool to teach your little one. It really lets Caroline communicate with us in a way that she wouldn’t be able to with just words. She beams with pride when she hears birds, signs the word bird and we say “oh you hear the birds!” It is so wonderful being able to communicate with her. It has also saved us from a lot of tantrums. Caroline knows how to sign “milk”, “eat”, “water”, “night-night”, “more” and “all done”. There is no reason for her to whine at us when she wants something because she can tell us exactly what she wants. She also has recently learned how to sign “potty” and has been telling us when she is going potty, which I feel like is a step towards potty training.

The lady who does Baby Signing Time has no idea who I am – I’m really just telling you this because it has made such a difference in our lives. You can start when they are little bitty too. Even though they might not be able to make the sign, they might get really excited when they see you sign a word and that’s the first step.

We sit with Caroline and watch the videos and make the signs together. Her signs aren’t perfect so its good to watch them with her so I know what her attempt at a sign looks like.

I know that you can get the videos at the library or on Amazon or check out their website and she has a whole bunch of other resources as well.

Also the lady who does Baby Signing Time has an amazing story of how she got into sign language. Check it out here.

For us, sign language has led to less frustration. I know that Caroline feels great when she can communicate with us and is being heard and understood.

Did you use sign language with your child? What resources did you use?

Hi OKC! I'm Carrie! My husband, Steven, and I met in college but never dated. Many years later, we reconnected and fell in love. After a whirlwind romance and gorgeous wedding I gave up my Texan status and moved to Oklahoma (he was worth it!) He spends his days on the road travelling all over the state of Oklahoma. We are the proud parents of our adorable 2 year old, Caroline and precious baby Benjamin. There is very little sleeping going on at our house. I am a music lover and a wannabe crafter. I am very good at following directions but not so great at creating my own masterpieces. I was a math teacher for 6 years before becoming a stay-at-home mom. Before being a teacher, I worked in the actuarial field, which is what I am doing part-time now. As a family we work hard to live a simple life, create great memories, and love the Lord with all our heart. I am so excited to be sharing my family with all of you and connecting with other local moms!

  1. Its so amazing how fast the little ones can pick up on it. I remember trying to get liv to sign more for a few days and when she wasnt catching on i gave up. Then after a few days of not practicing, she signed “more” at the table to me and i , of course, was like you’re a genius!! We taught her the basics and it was so helpful in communicating before she could speak!

  2. I know! Caroline picks up on signs that I wouldn’t even think would be important to her. She is big on signing “bug” which always makes me wonder… did she see a bug? Is there a bug on me?

  3. More, more, more! I love those videos. Declan signed “thank you” yesterday without prompting–I couldn’t believe it! Of course the downside is that I can’t get the songs out of my head.
