5 Tips for Creating a Mom Friendly Mini Capsule Wardrobe

5 Tips for Creating

A Capsule Wardrobe is all the buzz in the style world, everyone is either capsuling their clothing items, taking the konmari approach with their clothing, or just throwing their hands up in the air and saying “Forget it! Yoga pants and a tee shirt it is!”

So, what is a capsule wardrobe anyway?

It’s a mini wardrobe made up of really versatile pieces that you completely LOVE to wear. Here’s the bottom line, we do not utilize most our clothing, and we think the only solution is to continue to buy more and more clothing items to make up for what we don’t wear when in reality it’s a problem of fit, joy, and reality.

Fit – Get the clothing items out of your closet that genuinely do not fit you at all. Just get it out of your closet, seriously! Why is it there? The “someday” I will get back into it mentality has got to go, that someday may come and that someday may not come, but either way can we both agree it doesn’t fit and it serves zero purpose in your closet if it doesn’t fit. I am not telling you to get rid of it, I am telling you to get it out of your closet. Buy some plastic bins, fill them with the “someday” clothing items, and put those bins in your attic. Done and done.

Joy – Do you really love it? Does it make you feel good, is it flattering, do you wear it a lot? If it doesn’t bring you joy, why is it there?

Reality – What does your life look like realistically? Are you a SAHM, work out of the house mom, work from home mom, empty nester, grandmother, etc.? What does your life look like from a realistic setting that would set your wardrobe up to match that lifestyle? I don’t think you need all those power suits hanging in your closet if you are now a full time SAHM, I don’t think  you need all those cocktail dresses in your closet if you are now a work from home mom, I don’t think you need immense amounts of workout gear cluttering up your closet if you are a work in the office mom. You get my point.

It’s time to simplify and get your clothing situation under control. Is it possible? Yes! Start out by creating a mini capsule wardrobe in order to relieve the stress, overwhelming feelings, and any other obstacles that are standing in your way.

The key: A FEW essential pieces of classic clothing that fit and that you love for the season, and don’t forget that it can be personalized by you and your style. It takes very little clothing to make a capsule wardrobe, trust me. Also, FOCUS on the season. Do not overwhelm yourself with every item you own, think of the season we are in currently and make a capsule wardrobe based off Summer, Spring, Fall, Winter. It’ll ease the feeling of being overwhelmed.

If you’d like to create your own mini capsule wardrobe, here are 5 easy tips to get started:

1. Make a List

Think about what your lifestyle entails. Do you need to dress casual or dressy? What clothing items are a must in your wardrobe? Jeans. T-shirts. Dresses. Skirts. Leggings.

2. Take an inventory of what you already own

Chances are you already have the key items in your closet, you just need to look at them with a pair of eyes that are focusing on “capsule”. What clothing items do you gravitate towards the most? What do you already own that makes you feel pretty and flatters your figure? What can you mix and match for your lifestyle? Focus on the season we are in, and not anything else, and focus on your daily lifestyle, not the upcoming social event or vacation trip.

3. Focus on color and mixing and matching

When you are creating a capsule wardrobe it’s best to focus on a color palette. I personally love grays, blacks, and one bold color and a print of some sort. If you keep your focus on a color palette it’ll make this process easy, and when you start out with neutral colors it’ll make things effortless. You can then add in pops of color with a scarf, necklace, or a colorful cardigan or t-shirt.

4. Go through your clothing items for the current season

Here’s the wonderful thing about this, you will only keep and use the items that fit and make you happy. If you don’t love what you are going through, then take it out and focus on what you really do love and is flattering for your body type and lifestyle. The whole point of a capsule wardrobe is to use, keep, and wear what you love and gravitate towards with the focus on color and mixing and matching. The choice is yours on what items to use, you know what you love best.

5. Complete your capsule wardrobe

If you find that you are missing some key essential pieces that you may want to incorporate into your capsule, don’t feel like you need to spend a lot of money. Consignment shops have wonderful basics, as do thrift stores, and hosting a clothing swap with other friends is a great way to find free items that would work into your capsule. Scour pinterest for capsule wardrobe ideas to get you inspired and focused, all you have to do is literally type into the search bar “stay at home mom summer capsule wardrobe” or “business casual summer capsule wardrobe” or “black and white capsule wardrobe for summer”.

I created my own mini summer capsule wardrobe in 15 minutes! No joke! I know what fits, I know what I love, I know what is flattering for my body type, and I know my lifestyle. Does it help that I am a style coach … perhaps, BUT I also stayed focused on the season, my lifestyle, and what genuinely fits in a flattering way. I narrowed my clothing items down to these essentials for a mini summer capsule wardrobe:

6 bottoms, 5 tops, 3 vests, and 1 dress. I wear these pieces a lot and I gravitate towards them on a consistent basis.

Here are a few outfits I made using 2 t-shirts 3 different ways – The mixing and matching of outfit possibilities for all of these clothing items would last me a full month and then some. Life changes and we change with it. Remember, taking control and trying something new is meant to be revitalizing not stressful, this process isn’t meant to be miserable, it’s meant to be fun and useful.
